Requesting gutter guard cleaning

Guards change the job. Knowing what you have, and who installed it, helps you get a useful quote.

Identify what you have

Guards come in several forms: perforated covers, mesh screens, brush inserts and solid hoods. Each handles debris differently and each is removed differently. Photograph the front edge of the gutter and one end cap, then send those with your request.

If you do not know who installed them, say so. If you do, mention the company name and the date, since that tells us what we are dealing with before we arrive.

Installer paperwork and removal questions

Before anyone lifts a cover, check for paperwork. Some installers or manufacturers set rules about who may remove or clean the product. Ask any company whether it has handled your type, how it takes sections off, and what happens if a clip or panel breaks.

It is also reasonable to ask whether guard cleaning is priced differently from open-gutter cleaning. In general, it takes longer, since the crew reaches the trough beneath the cover.

Set expectations under a heavy oak canopy

Guards are sometimes installed because of heavy tree cover. They can help with larger leaves, but the fine debris from catkins and twigs can still collect on and around them.

A sensible request says so: ask for the cover surface to be cleared, the trough checked beneath and the downspouts tested. Our local gutter guide covers the tree species behind that debris, and which months to expect it.
